Neon Nights: A 2004 Subaru WRX STI After Dark

Photography by Damon May of Damon May Media

Some cars look best in the sun. This one comes alive after midnight.

We took my 2004 Subaru WRX STI out for a night shoot, and the result is some of the moodiest automotive photography I've seen. Crimson light spilled across the cabin, strings of warm bokeh glowed in the background, and one very capable model made the whole thing feel like a scene from a movie you'd want to watch twice.

The Car: Rally DNA in a Street Suit

The 2004 STI sits in a sweet spot for Subaru fans. It's the "Blobeye" generation, with a sharper front end and those unmistakable projector headlights that catch the light beautifully in the close-up shots. Look at the front fascia and you'll see the details that set an STI apart: the red STI badge on the grille, the Subaru Tecnica International lettering on the bumper, and the front lip that gives it a planted, ready-to-pounce stance.

Under the hood is the heart that made it a legend: the turbocharged 2.5L EJ257 boxer, paired with the driver-controlled center differential and a rally heritage that goes back decades. It's raw, mechanical, and loud in all the right ways. In a world of screens and silence, an analog turbo boxer with all-wheel-drive grip feels almost rebellious.

The Light: Why Night Photography Suits the STI

The magic of this shoot is the lighting. Deep magenta and red tones wrap around the body and interior, while a tangle of string lights melts into golden circles behind the car. The shallow depth of field keeps the badge and headlight razor sharp while everything else dissolves into color.

It's a reminder that the STI isn't just a performance car, it's a character. The aggressive lines, the glowing badges, and the glossy paint all take on a cinematic quality once the sun goes down.

The Model: Calm in the Cockpit

The human element is what turns a car feature into a story. In the first frame, our model gazes out from behind the wheel, her face washed in red against the dark cabin, framed by the window and the reflections of the city lights. In the second, the light turns cool and soft: a light denim shirt, a hand running through her hair, and a steady look straight into the lens, with the car's blue seat fabric just visible at the edge of the frame.

Together, the two portraits show both sides of the car's personality: intense and fiery, then quiet and confident.

The Takeaway

Whether you're a lifelong Subaru loyalist, a JDM collector, or just someone who appreciates a well-lit photo, this shoot proves that a 20-year-old STI still turns heads. Great cars don't age out of style. They get better with the right light.
